PRACTICAL BIOCHAR FOR FARMS, HOMESTEADS and PROPERTIES with KELPIE WILSON will be offered from JAN 9 - MAR 13 2025 by Regenerative Living Online
Kelpie Wilson of Wilson Biochar and author of The Biochar Handbook: A Practical Guide to Making and Using Bioactivated Charcoal will distill her 35 years of engineering and 15 years of biochar experience to guide students during our Practical Biochar online course to understand the essence of biochar, how to make it, and, most importantly, how to apply it to increase productivity, health, and quality of the soils we manage.
I have been researching and applying biochar since 2008, working for a variety of clients and communities, as well as here on my own homestead in southwest Oregon. I am delighted to be able to share all of the deep knowledge I have gained as well as hundreds of practical tips, tricks and guidelines for making and using biochar. - Kelpie Wilson

This short video shoes the entire burn from lighting to quenching. We made 1.5 cubic yards of biochar in about 3 hours. Speeding up the video shows how little smoke we generated. Slow motion reveals how smoke is pulled back into the kiln where it burns up.

The great forests of the Western US are mighty storehouses of carbon and life. But poor management, exclusion of natural fire and climate change are having a terrible impact. We need boots on the ground, converting woody debris to biochar to restore healthy forest soils and sequester carbon. This video describes the methods and technology for making biochar in the woods, and proposes a program for paying our youth to do this important work to save our forests and our climate.
We spent our last work day at Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve. This is a beautiful natural area managed by CSU Chico. It did not burn up in the Camp Fire, but the ecologists are working to manage fuels to prevent a catastrophic wildfire and reintroduce fire to the ecosystem in a beneficial way. We burned a few piles in the Oregon Kiln and in the Ring of Fire kiln. We also worked with another technique that I think has lots of promise. We lit a few dozen very small piles on top and let them burn to the glowing coal stage. Then we simply took shovels and flung the hot coals out on the damp ground. The coals, when separated, go out almost immediately. The grass is damp and does not catch fire. No quenching water needed.

This kiln is clean. This video proves it. The Ring of Fire Biochar Kiln is designed to burn the smoke.
Tabor made this great video showing how he turned a giant pile of brush into biochar - all by himself.
